Angus Brings Housing Crisis To Parliament
November 2nd, 2011 - 8:30pm
A state of emergency has been declared in Attawapiskat, Kashechewan and Fort Albany due to a lack of housing. Today in Question Period, Charlie Angus called on the Conservatives to work with the communities and Mushkegowuk Tribal Council to end the horrible conditions.
“Will the Minister commit to finally putting an end to the housing crisis? And will he give these Canadians the kind of housing they deserve.”
Angus says winter is starting to hit the coast yet families are forced to live in tents and cabins. “The housing situation is past the critical stage. We are now in a state of emergency.”
Angus has invited the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs to go to the communities and see first-hand, the appalling conditions. “Children and the elderly are at risk. It gets extremely cold up north.”
Angus and MPP Gilles Bisson will be heading to the affected communities early next week.
