Angus Challenges Government On Northern Food Prices
June 11th, 2012 - 7:16pm
Today in Question Period, Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus called on the government to resolve the ridiculously high food prices in the far north. Angus says paying 15 dollars for a bag of milk is unacceptable.
“The government knows how to send TimBits to Kandahar but has no plan for getting fresh milk to children in the far north. How can the children receive proper nutrition when parents can’t afford it?”
Last month, Angus met with the United Nations to discuss food costs faced by families on the James Bay coast. He accused the government of trying to divert attention from the reality in northern communities by attacking the United Nations.
“Minister Leona Aglukkak had the chance to show leadership when the United Nations came instead she led an embarrassing attack on the UN."
Angus says the government needs to show leadership and develop a strategy for First Nations.
“There are too many parts of this country that have to pay 4 times as much for food as the rest of the country. It’s no wonder there are so many health problems in far north communities.”
