ANGUS PAYS TRIBUTE TO MIDWIVES

MP Charlie Angus rose in Parliament today (Thurs) on the internationally recognised day for midwives to recognize their hard work. Midwives play an important role in maternal and newborn care in rural, remote and northern communities in Ontario.

Angus points out their vital importance to high quality maternity care and great work under limited resources and intense pressure.

In the north, I praise the midwives at the Centre de Santé Francophone Temiskaming. In the James Bay region we have incredible midwife teams in Attawapiskat and serving communities like Fort Albany and Moose Factory. In Timmins, Amy Moland-Osborne is helping mothers through Boreal Midwifery.”

The number of midwives in rural and remote communities is growing with 82 midwives serving these communities in Ontario alone. The number of rural and remote midwifery practice groups grew from 18 to 23 between 2010 and 2014.

Child birth should be a sacred moment of joy for families. Midwives and doullahs have helped restore the power of this moment to the mother, her child and the family.  Let’s praise the midwife.”

**statement in the House

Mr. Speaker,

Its International Midwife Day: My three awesome daughters were brought into this world through midwives.

Back when my oldest daughter Mariah was born, midwifery was not recognized under the Province. My friend Jason Collett and I bartered for the services for our daughters birth by building a deck for midwife Brigitte Lynch.

She has gone on to become a world leader on child maternal health.

Since then the opportunities for home births have changed dramatically. There are now 82 midwives serving rural and remote communities in Ontario alone.

In the north, I praise the midwives at the Centre de Santé Francophone Temiskaming.

In James Bay region we have incredible midwife teams in Attawapiskat and serving communities like Fort Albany and Moose Factory.

In Timmins Amy Moland-Osborne is helping mothers through Boreal Midwifery.

Midwives offer incredible care and teaching for young mothers.

Child birth should be a sacred moment of joy for families. Midwives and doullahs have helped restore the power of this moment to the mother, her child and the family.  Let’s praise the midwife.
