CHILDREN OF ATTAWAPISKAT FINALLY SEE THE LIGHT AT END OF THE TUNNEL: Sod Turns on New School Construction
June 22nd, 2012 - 5:53pm
After decades of discussion and lobbying, they will finally turn the sod on a new school in Attawapiskat this afternoon. Charlie Angus says this is a proud and happy day.
“We are celebrating today that we finally will get a new school for the children of
Attawapiskat. But we still ask ourselves why it had to take this long.”
Angus says plenty of people deserve credit for this project but in the end it was the children who made the difference. “When Shannon Koostachin began her campaign for the school, I think that was the difference maker. All of a sudden people from across Canada and the world for that matter saw the looks on the children’s faces.
Angus hopes other areas of the country will now be addressed. “This is only one school. There are many other areas of Canada facing the same challenges. If we are to move forward as a nation, the education of children must be front and center.”
Angus thanks the children, the community and the government for working together to get this project to fruition.
