HARPER’S CHOICE, PENSIONS OR PRISONS: NDP says Budget Show Down Looming
March 16th, 2011 - 7:20pm
Charlie Angus says Stephen Harper has a choice to make…either the Conservative government will work with the NDP on pension reform and seniors, or whether they will waste billions on new prisons. Angus says if the Conservatives choose the latter, it is because they’d rather fight an election.
“The Conservative war machine is ramping up. We will not support a $10 billion spending spree on prisons while seniors and those on fixed incomes are being offered crumbs. Mr. Harper has a choice and we will soon see whether or not he plunges us into another election.”
The New Democrats have offered to work with the Conservatives to address senior’s needs, overhauling Canada’s pension plan and getting doctors into under-serviced areas.
Angus says Mr. Harper does not appear willing to make Parliament work. “Mr. Harper has spent the last five years giving breaks to big banks and the oil companies. We say it’s time to help out seniors and those who are getting dinged every time they turn on the furnace.”
The federal budget will be tabled next Tuesday.
