NDP Reaches out to Chamber on Ring of Fire

Northern Ontario NDP MPs have written to the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, expressing their concerns regarding the Conservative government’s lack of leadership on the Ring of Fire project.

“The Treasury Board President’s decision to tell the Timmins Chamber of Commerce the federal government is unlikely to make any progress on the Ring of Fire project is disappointing at best,” said NDP MP Charlie Angus (Timmins - James Bay). “Industry supports this project, New Democrats support this project, and it’s time the Conservatives in Ottawa support this project.”

The letter, sent to the Ontario Chamber of Commerce yesterday, outlines the NDP’s concerns regarding the Conservative’s failure to take leadership of the project. Further, it outlines steps New Democrats are taking to support the project.

“Without strong leadership and political will to start this project, Northern Ontarians are losing out on jobs, development and economic stimulus,” said NDP Mining critic Claude Gravelle (Nickel Belt). “While Conservatives are dragging their feet, New Democrats have been conducting outreach tours throughout communities involved in the Ring of Fire to help build consensus and maintain momentum. It’s time the Conservatives took real action on the file.”

In addition to being signatories on the letter to the Ontario Chamber of Commerce NDP MPs Claude Gravelle, Carol Hughes (Algoma—Manitoulin—Kapuskasing) and John Rafferty (Thunder Bay – Rainy River) have participated in tours of the region
