New Democrats Introduce Bill To Protect Seniors
March 16th, 2012 - 4:13pm
The NDP has tabled a bill that would automatically register all Canadian seniors for the Guaranteed Income Supplement.
The GIS provides additional benefits to low-income Canadians seniors. Currently, people who are eligible must apply to receive these benefits. However, due to many administrative obstacles, it is estimated that some 135,000 GIS-eligible seniors don’t receive any benefits.
Charlie Angus says this bill will correct a serious injustice to the most vulnerable seniors. “The federal government is unjustly depriving many seniors of significant income owed to them under the GIS.”
Angus criticized the Conservatives for not doing enough to protect low-income seniors. “The government is saving money on the backs of vulnerable seniors by refusing to address this loophole in our old age security system. That’s unacceptable.”
New Democrats are urging the Conservatives to support the bill and relax the administrative requirements in order to provide the best service possible to our seniors.
