NO NEED FOR PANIC FOR SNOWBIRDS DRIVING TO FLORIDA: But Advisory Issued
February 15th, 2013 - 6:23pm
The Canadian Automobile Association is advising anyone who travels to Florida to consider an international drivers license. The CAA says the State of Florida enacted new legislation in January to require an IDL.
But Charlie Angus says this is just a warning since the law is under further review by the state legislature.
“The intent of the legislation is to assist law enforcement officers who were having difficulty with documentation from visitors that are printed in languages other than English. Right now, the Florida Highway Patrol is deferring enforcement until it is clarified whether a license in English is acceptable.”
The state is now looking into whether the legislation violates the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.
Angus says people shouldn’t panic but should be made aware. “Until further notice, Ontario residents can continue to use their Ontario Driver’s License. But as always, law enforcement officials have the final say.”
