Charlie's Posts

The New Democratic Party has brought the growing food crisis on the James Bay coat to the attention of the United Nations. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Food Charles de Shutter is investigating Canada’s lack of planning for equitable access to food.  Charlie Angus, joined a team led by NDP Leader Tom Mulcair to meet with the UN delegation.

Angus says that nowhere is this inequity more noticeable than in the isolated fly-in communities of Northern Canada.

CharlieAngus is asking why Conservative cabinet ministers racked up over $600,000 in overtime charges. The news comes as the Harper government is slashing public services and is telling seniors they will have to work longer in order to be eligible for a pension.

Angus says the issue is not that cabinet ministers have chauffeurs, but on the
flagrant abuse of the service. Treasury Board president Tony Clement had a
driver on call for 360 days last year.

Mr, Speaker,

I rise today to pay tribute to a great leader and a good friend – Randy Kapashesit, Chief of MoCreebec on Moose Factory Island.

The people of the James Bay region are shocked that a man so full of vision could die on us so suddenly.

Randy was a tireless advocate for Aboriginal equity.

His vision for a sustainable community for MoCreebec included the building of co-operative housing and the immensely successful Cree Eco-Lodge on Moose Factory.

Randy had an international vision.

On this National Day of Mourning, New Democrats pay tribute to workers killed or
injured at work.

This day reminds us that much work remains to be done to prevent workplace
accidents. Despite progress made in occupational health and safety since the
creation of the National Day of Mourning in 1984 by the Canadian Labour
Congress, it is essential to continue our efforts and ensure that resources are
available for continued progress.

A new report by the NDP shows that raising the age of eligibility for Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement from 65-67 will lead more seniors into poverty.

That’s why Pensions Critic Irene Mathyssen tabled a motion calling on the House to reject the Conservative plan to raise the age of eligibility to 67.

“Up to 95,000 recent retirees would fall into poverty today without OAS and GIS. The poverty rate of these seniors would increase from six to 25 percent,” said Mathyssen.
