Charlie's Posts

Charlie Angus is raising alarm bells about the third world policing conditions face by northern First Nations after the apparent suicide of a young woman in Kasabonika First Nation who was being held in the back seat of a police car because the local police station had no heat.

Angus says this death is just the latest in a series of horror stories facing the under-funded Nishnawbe Aski Police (NAPs) service.

Canada’s New Democrats have launched a campaign to eliminate extra charges for receiving a monthly bill in the mail. Over the last year many telephone, internet, TV and other companies have introduced new monthly charges on customers who continue to receive a paper copy of their bill in the mail.

When’s the last time you bought anything and had to pay extra for the bill it was written on?” asked Charlie Angus. "What an insult -- getting charged a bill just so you can your pay bill. These fees are a rip-off."

The Canadian Automobile Association is advising anyone who travels to Florida to consider an international drivers license. The CAA says the State of Florida enacted new legislation in January to require an IDL.

But Charlie Angus says this is just a warning since the law is under further review by the state legislature.

Timmins-James Bay continues to do well in terms of federal investment. In the month of January, several projects received funding through Fednor.  Charlie Angus says the 11 projects will help economic development in our region.

Do you know someone who has given exceptional service to education? Nominations are now being accepted for the 2013 Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence and Excellence in Early Childhood Education. Charlie Angus says there are educators across the north who deserve recognition.
