November 19th, 2013 - 12:30pm
A young basketball team is making James Bay history. The Fort Albany girls’ senior basketball squad has qualified for the regional provincial basketball finals being held this weekend in Sault Ste. Marie. It is the first time a community from the coast has been able to send one of their teams to the finals.Charlie Angus says, win or lose this weekend, the girls team from Fort Albany have already won big time.
“There is an incredible sports culture on the coast but up until now high school teams have been hampered by lack of facilities, isolation and the high cost of competing in other communities. Fort Albany girls have broken through the barrier and it a sign of what is possible when young people have the support they need.”
MPP Gilles Bisson says Fort Albany has become a real success story in the region with the building of the Peetabeck Academy for students.
“Just think of what will be possible on the coast when we have finally have proper school facilities in Attawapiskat and Kashechewan. When you invest in education, you see results for decades to come.”
Angus and Bisson say special mention needs to be made of Coach Justin Sackaney who has led the Fort Albany basketball program for the last six years.
