Tribute to Randy Kapashesit
May 3rd, 2012 - 7:09pm
I rise today to pay tribute to a great leader and a good friend – Randy Kapashesit, Chief of MoCreebec on Moose Factory Island.
The people of the James Bay region are shocked that a man so full of vision could die on us so suddenly.
Randy was a tireless advocate for Aboriginal equity.
His vision for a sustainable community for MoCreebec included the building of co-operative housing and the immensely successful Cree Eco-Lodge on Moose Factory.
Randy had an international vision.
He was involved in the United Nations North American Indigenous Caucus on the planning committee for the United Nations 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples.
Randy loved music, ideas and people. Whenever you talked with
Randy you knew you were in the presence of a profound and special person.
I am deeply sorrowful that I cannot be there to say goodbye to him today but on behalf of the New Democratic Party I would like to offer my sincere condolences to his wife Donna, his children Waseyabin and Ajuawak and the people of the Moose Factor region who have lost a great leader.
